I live in a free world
I hold no prejudices
There are no judgments
I don't discriminate
I believe in equality
I live and let live
I live in a free world
But, do I, really?!
Equality. What does it mean? I guess, equal opportunities for all. This is what it means. Also maybe, no prejudices against. This is what it means. Treating others like you want others to treat you. This is what it means. We say we all practice it, but do we?!
While surfing channels, chanced upon this movie y'day night, saw it for the first time actually. Life in a Metro. That's what got me ruminating.
Kay Kay Menon's character has been having an extra marital affair with a girl for the past two years now. His wife, played by, Shilpa Shetty has been hanging out, read no physical intimacy involved - had been on the verge of, but backed off, with a man for the past 3-4 weeks. On the night of confrontation this is the dialogue(well, somewhat) between them -
KKM - "You, know, I have been seeing this girl outside"
"for about two years now"
"but it is not .. you know.. there is nothing emotional about it.."
"I am sorry.."
"but, let's start over alright.."
SS, crying retreats into the kitchen
KKM follows. There,
SS - "You know I also want to tell you something"
"Will you forgive me?"
"I didn't go for a movie with Shruti, I went with someone else.."
"I don't know how it happened..it's been 3-4 weeks"
"but I am sorry.."
SS, still crying, goes and hugs him.
KKM doesn't retreat, but it shown unable to touch her either.
KKM - "So, did you sleep with him?!"
SS - *shocked* "No!"
*with apparent contempt*
KKM - "This is what you do when I go to office to work?"
"Did he use my bed?"
Later he's shown to walk out of the house.
So, the 'well educated Cosmopolitan Indian man' as they show here, is alright with his wayward ways but even a very small straying of his wife, he finds unacceptable. Which in my opinion *might have happened due to his apparent neglect.
We say, we treat people equally, but do we really, is my question!

Well, interesting catch. I have to say that when I watched this scene from the movie I thought exactly in the same way as you did. It's true that equality is still far from away in the real world, men still dominate the women. Just a few days ago I read a news, it was a Fatwa against the working women in Islam, means as per Islam women should not work outside of the home, they should just do the work at home. Such bitter reality really makes me furious and then I ask the same question to myself- Is this what we call EQUALITY??
MY favourite scene from the movie, this is :-D For the reality it reflects...
@ vivek - it is really sad. guess what, a man about ten years my senior in my previous office had the galls to actually say that men are better than women at office work and hence the women should stay at home and take care of stuff there!!!
@ krits - yea, but also when you think about it, really, it makes you go :-/
Yes, i agree female sexuality is repressed in India. In fact, Indian women need freedom in bed
well ya ... Can i ask u y we referance equally in this way..guy does it & and gals debate abt it ... She debates abt she shud be give freedom to do that .. No gal wats it ..trust me i know... Its the beauty in them .. Most gals dont release that.
Tats thr strength.
N abt in moive .. Metrosexuals are like that .. So thing is that they r breed like tat ... Even more sad is tat kind of guys never rels ths.
They dont rels love is all about respect..the day u lost it u r gone.
Shiv - spoken like a typical male of the indian species!! hmmph!
Well...this one a gr8 piece which depicts the relationship at the moment in the world..but at it say it reflects the part of society or youth or us not as the whole their are times where both men and women are treated equally..its just the instance we need to see...
Nice post and a beautiful girls face whom we love is the most attractive thing in this entire world.thanks for posting this blog.
I hear you on gender bias... But then again the conversation also brings forth the subtle difference in importance given to physical and emotional intimacy by the two genders...
Different twists to the same tale...
Wish blogger had a 'Like' button...
You've got a point and I liked the way you started and connected the dots so well. That one is my favorite scene from the movie coz it exposes the hypocrisy we live with in the country, whether we are Indian women from cities or villages, the attitude of men doesn't change.
