Has Scarlett grown up?

"You've changed Scarlett", he said quietly."The charming girl has become an elegant, grown-up woman. I salute you, I really do."

The Scarlett O'Hara of Tara, as we know her has grown up. Was it a natural progression or a forced one? Well.. for me, for one, Scarlett was perfect. Perfect as perfection goes. With a hint of impatience, those emerald eyes seething with undisguised jealousy, that temper barely in control, yes and also that fierce pride, that unwavering loyalty for her home her land, that protective feeling for her nears and dears, the uncompromising practicality, the foolhardy courage to stand up against the yankees and with her love for Rhett. She was perfect.

Why did she need to be a grown up? more than she was, already. Because, people did not understand her joyful self , her free spirits or was it because they did and were not able to mask their jealousy that they were not courageous enough to live up?

P.S. Would follow up to this post when I finish reading the sequel-Scarlett, by Alexandra Ripley to Gone with the wind, by Margaret Mitchell. Which incidentally is one of my favourite books still :)
