Never has it been said by a man that he's understood a woman. And never will he be able to say that.
They can only perhaps try to understand. That is, if at all the woman lets them.
Let me try to simplify the process. I'll take David Lehman's help here and quote something out of 'When a woman loves a man' (complete poem). That is so how we want things to be like.
When she says margarita she means daiquiri.
When she says quixotic she means mercurial.
And when she says, "I'll never speak to you again,"
she means, "Put your arms around me from behind
as I stand disconsolate at the window."
He's supposed to know that.
